If You Think It’s About Looting and Property Destruction, then You Don’t Get It
It has been said that a person can forgive, if he or she thinks the transgressor really gets it, really understands the damage that has been done. Many people don’t get it. I can understand why young people may not get it, because they haven’t lived long enough yet, haven’t seen enough. But I think I’m getting it now, because I’m getting older. I’ve seen some things over a longer period of time.
What I’m realizing is that I’ve lived 30 years since Rodney King’s assault, but people of color are still getting murdered and they still aren’t being given an equal chance in the pursuit of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. The corona virus has made it very clear that people of color continue to have lesser economic opportunities and as a result the destruction of the virus is significantly worse for them.
That is our transgression. We, as white people, with control of the power in the US, have not done enough to change the experience for people of color and they have had enough. This is what drives the looting and property destruction by people of color. They are tired of it. Tired of the rhetoric. Tired of words versus action.
That is what the rioting and property looting is about. White people have to do more. People of color want to see that things are going to change, that white people get it and are going to do something about it. I was sent a link to and article titled, “75 Things White People Can Do for Racial Justice.” Here it is. https://medium.com/equality-includes-you/what-white-people-can-do-for-racial-justice-f2d18b0e0234. I intend to review this list and start doing the ones that I am able to do and that make sense to me. I suggest that all white people do the same.
If this list seems overwhelming and it might, you could try something simpler. I spoke with one black person and he suggested doing one thing, "Listen to Black and Brown people - just listen! And work with that listening ear." I know we are all busy and at this time so stressed with the aftermath of this pandemic. Just take one step.
The greatness of our country is that we are a melting pot and we are idealistic. We believe that the world is meant to be a good place for everyone. We white people have to do more. There is a young black girl on the TV right now. She is facing a group of police and saying I will fight for my people. We white people have to have as much courage and love as she has. Black people are my people. Black people are your people. If you look in your soul, you will know that.
I think when people of color see enough white people doing this, they will stop protesting and rioting. This time though, we have to make it happen. We cannot continue with the status quo. That is how we will make America great again. Actually, that is how we will finally make America great. It’s always been pretty awesome, for white people. For America to be great, it must be pretty awesome for all people. Let's finish the job we started 200 years ago. Per Larry the Cable Guy, let's get er done.
